Woodstock Film Festival
Brand Identity
Type: Academic
Course: Communication Design 4
Woodstock Film Festival’s rebrand repositions the festival as a contemporary platform for independent film and cultural dialogue. Rooted in its legacy of championing emerging voices, the identity modernizes the festival through the addition of music. The design language balances cinematic expression with structural clarity, extending across the logo, stationery, posters, and merchandise to create a cohesive and evolving festival experience.
ProcessThe process began with research, examining its counter-cultural roots and relevance for new generations. Psychedelic elements were reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, with color used to reflect shifting moods and emotional tone. The approach emphasized inclusivity and diverse storytelling, aligning with the festival’s evolving audience. Two logo directions were explored, balancing legacy with a forward looking identity.
LogoThe logo is built from a custom W letterform, using negative space to form two closing quotation marks. These marks symbolize the lasting impact of storytelling, where words don’t simply end, but resonate. By emphasizing the closing quote, the identity highlights the value of independent voices and the importance of amplifying stories that leave a lasting impression.
Pattern SystemThe W pattern becomes a modular foundation for the identity, built through layering and repetition. Its structure allows elements to shift, overlap, and scale across applications.
Poster Series
The design system is showcased with layered graphic elements, creating depth and visual rhythm. A cinematic duotone treatment to the photography evokes light and shadow. Typography, color, and pattern shift within a consistent structure, allowing each poster to feel distinct yet connected. The system is designed to evolve, scaling across formats.
Brand ApplicationsThe identity extends across applications, bringing the system to life across physical touch-points.
Digital AssetsDigital applications modernize the festival through streaming and new modes of connection, expanding how audiences engage with film beyond a theater.
